About the Call Full Details
The W. Eugene Smith Grant is an annual opportunity presented to a photographer whose past work and proposed project align with W. Eugene Smith’s tradition of concerned photography and dedicated compassion, as demonstrated throughout his distinguished 45-year career as a photographic essayist.
This grant provides crucial support to photographers embarking on a new photographic project or working to complete an ongoing one. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. While professional documentary photographers or photojournalists are welcome, it is not a prerequisite to apply. The fund encourages and accepts applications from multiple creative collaborators, and international submissions are highly encouraged.
Judges seek photographers whose proposed projects are most likely to utilize exemplary and compelling photojournalism and documentary photography (potentially supplemented by or incorporating multimedia) to explore issues of significant human import and impact. These may include, but are not limited to, topics such as social change, humanitarian concerns, armed conflict, or other subjects of interpersonal, psychological, cultural, social, environmental, scientific, medical, and/or political significance, ideally conveying an underlying acknowledgment of our shared humanity.
