The W. Eugene Smith Grant encourages and supports visual storytellers whose photographic work continues W. Eugene Smith’s tradition of dedicated compassion, as demonstrated throughout his 45-year career as a photographic essayist. Special consideration is given to projects promoting social change, embracing new technologies and image distribution, and integrating traditional photography with contemporary practice for social impact. Judges seek compelling photojournalism and documentary photography (potentially multimedia-supplemented) addressing critical issues related to the human condition, such as social change, humanitarian concerns, or armed conflict, ideally expressing an underlying acknowledgment of our common humanity.
Professional photographers at least 18 years of age are eligible to apply. Applicants must submit a biography (up to 1500 characters), an optional CV (up to 2000 characters or unlimited PDF), a concise project description (up to 2000 characters), and a detailed project proposal (up to 3000 characters) explaining how the grant funds will be used to launch or complete the project. Up to 40 images from the proposed project or past work (clearly marked) demonstrating the candidate’s vision and ability to execute the project are required. AI-generated imagery is not permitted.
