About the Call Full Details
The Busan Biennale Organising Committee is inviting applications for the Artistic Director position of the Sea Art Festival 2027. This distinctive contemporary art event, established in 1987, continually reinterprets Busan’s relationship with its coastal environment and urban landscape through contemporary art.
They seek candidates with a clear vision and expertise to critically engage with Busan’s transformation as a coastal city and to envision new possibilities for the festival. The role involves curating site-specific exhibitions and projects that reinterpret Busan’s coastal spaces and urban transformation from a contemporary perspective. This includes developing art projects centered on Busan’s maritime character, such as beaches, riverfronts, and ports, with potential connections to surrounding urban areas like local streets, shops, public facilities, cultural spaces, and media walls.
The successful applicant is expected to extend beyond conventional exhibition formats by incorporating a range of approaches, including research, workshops, performances, and public programs. Additionally, fostering collaboration and co-production with public institutions, arts and cultural organizations, research institutions, and other partners in Busan is a key aspect, creating connections through the sharing of local knowledge and experience. The festival is expected to feature approximately 20 participating artists and/or collectives from the Republic of Korea and internationally. Applicants may propose collaborators within their curatorial proposal to support the planning and implementation of the exhibition.
