About the Call Full Details

The Mori Contemporary Art Foundation (MoriCAF) invites international curators to apply for its 2027–28 residency programme in Japan. This opportunity, lasting between one to three months (maximum 90 days) from April 2027 to March 2028, is designed for curators with a keen interest in Japanese contemporary art.

Participants will engage in research, interact with local artists, researchers, museums, exhibitions, festivals, galleries, and alternative spaces, ultimately contributing to the global dissemination of Japanese contemporary art. Prior to the residency’s conclusion, participants are expected to present their research findings, with priority given to proposals directly linked to specific future exhibitions or projects rather than general research.

Eligibility requires applicants to reside outside Japan, possess five or more years of curatorial experience in contemporary art, and be fluent in either English or Japanese. There are no age or nationality restrictions. Successful applicants must be able to live and work independently, actively participate in publicity, and maintain a continuous stay at the accommodation provided by MoriCAF throughout the residency period. Engagement in commercial activities during the residency is prohibited.

The Prizes

Primary Award Value Selected curators receive comprehensive support including accommodation, round-trip airfare, and research project expenses up to 200,000 JPY (tax included) for domestic transportation, additional accommodation, and other related costs.
